I know it's not strictly a Swindon-based entry, however I feel it'd be daft not to cover arguably the biggest night in greyhound racing. Saturday see's the final of the Derby take place at Wimbledon, with Swindon's Kevin Hutton running with Screen Critic in that final. A big good luck to Kev for the race, but also a mighty great well done for getting to such a big final.

My Pick: Ballymac Jones
I actually thought that the sprint division was on a bit of a downward spiral recently, however here you have, arguably, the top 6 sprinters in the country at the moment (barring Your A Champ, Lil Risky). Ballymac Jones is my pick here for Pat Rosney. This dog is the model of consistancy, winning in decent times at Nottingham, and being there or there abouts in the majority of his races. He's a dog that can ping (vital in a sprint), but even if he misses it slightly he has the EP to get to the bend handy with his rivals.

My Pick: Loughteen Blanco
Loughteen Blanco for me in this one. I know that Lemon Pluto has a bit of quality, but he's too hit or miss at the boxes to be backing him. Blanco seems to always be able to pace to the bend well. He also has a terrific Wimbledon record.

My Pick: Farloe Tango (NAP)
Cracking race once again (hard not to expect that on derby final night!), however, to me Tango is different league to everything in this race. Yes, I'm bigging him up that much. I remember that run at Yarmouth when he first went over the trip, and he just cruised past everything in his wake, even checking rather violently at the 5th (if my memory serves me right). Put it this way, if you're thinking about betting him here, why not just have your stake on him winning the St. Leger? I think he could, potentially, be THE star of the stayers division.

My Pick: Holdem Spy
My pick goes with the 'butcher's apron' in Holdem Spy. I would argue that this greyhound is one of the fastest in training, it's just that sometimes I think his mind wonders a touch! Even with a dog like Teejays Bluehawk in the race (who I've never been too high on as a top class OR performer if I'm honest), I think the Spy should go well here. There's such a lack of any form of pace in this race also, I can't see anything really leading him out of the 3rd.

My Pick: Musical Gaga (NB)
Wow, now this is a race! Cracking marathon this one, and my vote goes for Musical Gaga. Like many others, I've been waiting for this bitch to go over a marathon. She obliged in style over 750m at Romford, however this will be the true test for her. To me, the trip wont be an issue, and she has the early to lead and hold on strong. In all seriousness though, I can see 4 potential winners in this race, it's that tough a race!
20:28 - William Hill Champion Hurdle Final
My Pick: Droopys Lorenzo
I do admit to having a bit of 5/2 about Lorenzo before the heats last week to win this competition, and overall I'm pretty happy. Somehow he clocked the fastest heat win, even though the comment 'Hit5H' is an understatement. He practically ran straight into it, and didn't even look like jumping it! To me, Lorenzo is the quickest dog in the race, it's just whether his jumping holds up to the masters of the jumping in my mind, 5 and 6.
20.43 - William Hill Derby Plate Final
My Pick: Castlelyons Cofi
To me, Cofi is completely different league to the others in this race (no offence to the others!). Charlie's dog ran an awesome race last time out, and looks to have a perfect make up here to do much of the same. Hopefully the past couple of runs are this dog coming to form, as to me he has the potential to be a good competition dog, however his form is very hit and miss at the moment.

My Pick: Screen Critic
This race, honestly, I would just sit back and enjoy the spectacle. I've tipped Screen Critic because, let's be honest, it would be great to see him win. In fairness, on the draw he has an outstanding chance. Enjoy the final, of what has been a truely great Derby.

My Pick: Droopys Odell
Again, it's just a case of scope in class in this race, as Droopys Odell looks a class above the rest in this race. Seamus Cahill's bitch has been crying out for the red, and should make full use of it here with a middle runner in 2. One thing to mention, and I know that for scheduling reasons it's the case, but it does feel really perculiar 1) the derby being so early, and 2) there being 5 races after the derby. Very odd.

My Pick: Alterra
I actually thought this was a very give-or-take race. It's the sort of race where, if I were at the track, I probably wouldn't actually have a bet in it. Alas, I've sided with Ernie Gaskin's runner Alterra here. I watched him at Romford last week clocking 24.05, and he looked mightly impressive, showing some great early toe.

One slight thing before I start, and I'll be talking more about the Produce Stakes in a couple of paragraphs. I do just wonder why there are 3 '11 whelp British Breds in this race, yet they aren't entered for the Produce Stakes? Seems a wierd decision.
Anywho, my vote here goes for one of my favourites, Bonamassa Rocks. He's a cracking dog, and when he's on the buddy he's a hard dog to break down. He'll have a hard time getting an early advantage over 1 and 3 though, which could give Kev's Gemstone Jack a peach of a run through the middle!

My Pick: Fionntra Molly
Good little race this, with my pick being the 'form' bitch in the race, Fionntra Molly. She's been winning for fun at Coventry recently. You should always be following a bitch in form, alas the bet here has to be her. This is as tough a bitches race as you'll find, however, so her task may not be all that easy. Expect a good EP battle between 1 and 2.

My Pick: Jazz Apollo
In terms of recent form, I do believe that Jazz Apollo has the best card in this race. He's still clocking 29.70's at Hove, which for a 4 1/2 year old is just awesome. I do love the seniors/veteran races, there should definitely be more of them in the calendar. Keep an eye on Crusty Crab in trap 6 for Ray Jones!

As you all know, it's the Produce Stakes time again. However, this year has certainly taken a tumble in the numbers. We're used to getting around 75 entries or so, which, when you factor in the dogs that are often withdrawn for whatever reason, the number usually goes down to 70.
This year we've got a total of 56 (upon the first count), which is obviously rather disappointing. Obviously, a number of factors are involved, the main of which is that the litters just aren't being bred any more. Surely, this number of entries should be an indication to everyone that we need to look at how we treat our home breeders and see about how we can change this pattern around.
Again, one thing that did surprise me were a few of the absent dogs that I knew where British Breds. I touched on it in my OR preview, the likes of the Offshore Sox litter, the Final Gold litter all missing. I do wonder why this is the case, and what can be done to perhaps get them to enter next time around. One thing that I think must be done is that the date needs to change. July makes it too early for the younger whelps to get proper racing and experience in, giving advantage to the older whelps. Now that our Produce is the only one remaining, I feel a September date would be more suited to alleviate those age worries. Maybe this is something the Breeders Forum should look at?

The Derby, Stayers Races, The Produce Stakes
First things first, and a big well done has to go to Kevin
Hutton and the team for getting Screen
Critic through to the William Hill Greyhound Derby Final. It takes a hell
of a training feat to get a dog to the ‘big dance’, so congratulations. This
week in greyhound racing must be one of the best for the connections of the
finalists, knowing that the big race is coming up. What with the Derby Dinner etc.,
it makes for a terrific event. A lot of questions are asked about the Derby
(more the actual home of the event, rather than the event itself), however it
cannot be disputed that the competition captivates the greyhound fraternity. If
(like moi) you were on him Ante post (first 6), then you can sit back and relax
to watch the final! I must say, looking at the trap draw as I would any open
race, you have to say he has the plum draw of the race (along with Sidaz Jack). I hope to do a full Derby night preview on this blog sometime in the week.
Back to things at home, and it’s been good to see a slight resurgence
in the stayers division at Swindon. It seems nowadays that we’re having more
and more stayers races, which makes for a much more interesting card. Variety
is the spice of life, as they say, so it’s good to see this variation. The
problem with maintaining two separate grades is that obviously the greyhounds
have to be trialled over the trip before commencing racing. However, with the
recent rule change going from 8 to 12 weeks being the time that you can be
declared ‘out of time’ over a trip, this will certainly help keeping the races
going. Would more variety be accepted?
Of course it would. Personally, I’d love to see graded racing over all the trips;
however I understand how that can be difficult to keep up.
Of course, just round the corner now is the Produce Stakes,
the biggest British Bred race in the calendar. I always look forward to the
Produce, as it allows the smaller breeder to compete with the big boys to
compete for a big prize. It’s a competition that always springs a few surprises,
however it also brings together the best British breds in the country. In terms
of our best local chance, I believe the best hope we have is with Fabulous Fusion, batting for the Nick
Ralph kennel. She’ll have some competition, however, from several top class
dogs including Johnny’s Boy. One big
question I’ve asked is whether we might see Mr. Lister and Golden Wonder make an appearance?

R.I.P ID Books, Hello 21st Century
This week marks a sad week in greyhound racing (well, for those that are really that OTT about them), as the long time trusty servant to racing office's, the ID book, is taken out of the rules of racing. In it's place, the microchip technology that has worked so well for the past couple of years becomes the new rule, though markings of the dogs are still available. It might sound a bit like something of nothing, but this step (for greyhound racing as a whole), is pretty significant, as it see's a sport that, a lot of the times seems to struggle with embracing technology, making full use of a very powerful and up to date tool.
The use of the microchipping system, however, makes me wonder whether the sport is actually doing enough to modernise and embrace technology. The marking up procedure, and thus the posting of paperwork etc, is still in tact, meaning that there is still the long turn-around from markup to trial. Knowing a little bit aout how databases work, and with the development of digital photography, I do wonder why a new marking up procedure couldn't be looked into. The idea of markings of a dog should still be in use, however the capture of a photo would surely suffice, and in fact improve on a drawing and sketching?
As some of you may know, I am on an IT degree, and have a pretty good mind when it comes to computers and that sort of thing. I honestly cannot fathom why, this day in age, a dog cannot be registered and ready to run, literally on the day. The mark up could take place in the form of a photo identification procedure, with the dogs details checked against the Irish/Stud book ID. From here, it's a case of data entry and registration confirmation and voila, the dog should be ready to race. Problems with paperwork could be dealt with there and then, thus saving owners and trainers time, effort and money. This system is relatively basic to set up, and wouldnt cost a great deal, saving money in the long run.
The issue, however, isn't just with this sort of procedure. The embracing technology issue is industry-wide. There are so many ways of reaching new audiences now, it's unreal. All it takes is a but of savvy and working out, and your away. This blog, for example, is completely free to run. Yes, it takes a bit of time to post up every now and again, however you are giving the audience (in this case you, the reader) anoer insight and something different to look at. I applaud trainers who take the initative to try these new things out. Twitter, for example, is a great (and yes, free!) tool to reach a new audience and publicise your product. Trainers are just starting to embrace this, and I've heard but nothing but good things, such as getting in new owners. The number one thing trainers (and companies in general) say to me is how they're struggling to find new people. Embracing these technologies is certainly a start, and I see no reason why we can't use these tools. We as a track have new people attending due to it, so it just shows it works!
The issue with embracing technology is that it does take time and effort to set up, and you do need it working properly and looking good. The other thing is that you need to WANT to use it. Modernisation is there to make things easier, alas go out there and use it!

Open Race Night: Preview
As you may have noticed, we are holding a rather large amount opens, headlined by the Abbey Taxis Marathon, over the brand new distance of 932m. I must firstly say a big thank you to Jamie and Steve of Calne racing for sponsoring this race, and I hope that the night's racing makes for excellent viewing. Personally, I've never seen a marathon run at Swindon. We used to have the distance of 933m, which some of you may be familiar with, however the 8 bend journey at our track will certainly be something to watch!
Here's my preview of the 8 open races taking place on Wednesday night:
19:37 - The Swindon Maiden 509'er
My Pick: Jammey Jimmy

3) Stockwell Cher (M) - 4/1

In terms of a maiden, this isn't a bad little race. There's certainly 4 dogs in there that I really think could win this. However, after his awesome performance on Saturday night, I'm siding with Jammey Jimmy in this one. Ray Jones' dog has found a good patch of form recently, winning in some style on Saturday night in a sub-29.00 time. On his Irish form, he certainly should be in this class, and he's slowly finding his feet at Swindon. He's got a great kick of early pace, and the long run over over this trip will really suit him. He also gets home strong, so everything is in his favour here! He might find some traffic problems with Tarty Toes in trap 1, as he'll be heading for the rail. The draw has worked out otherwise, with Stockwell Cher (more of a wide runner in my mind) taking the 3 box.

A hard sprint to fathom this, with my vote going for Mark Siddel's Forest Force. I believe this greyhound was trained by Heather Dimmock before hand (someone correct me if I'm wrong!), and one thing is that he has some decent sprint times on his card. 16.10 at Coventry isn't exactly slow. I know I'm not one to tip Trap 1 in a sprint, however I do think this race all plays into Force's hands. The obvious one to watch in this race is Swords Messi. Kevin Hutton's dog put in a blistering 16.24 trial, and has the draw on the outside.

To me this looks one of those 'Home and Hosed' races, with my tip (and NAP) going to Airport Captain. Kevin Hutton's dog is on debut here, and looks a real class act. His Irish card is pretty decent, and this sort of trip looks absolutely ideal for him. My interest, however, also goes to Bramley Finney. John Peterson's runner was in all sorts of bother down at Hove last time out, but he's certainly got something about him. Certainly, this trip looks ideal for him. That's a potential forecast there, 1 to beat 5.

To me, the only issue will be anything that collar's him coming home, namely Gemstone Billy. The most foreseen outcome here is a 1-2 forecast e/w.

The draw should also work out, as he can lead up the red.

Kevin Hutton's charge won a decent race on Sky night, however I do feel this is a more difficult task. I freely admit, I had my doubts that Harper would actually stay the trip, but I must say I've been proved wrong, as he seems to see it out without an issue. He's got the early pace to lead here, aswell as the strength to get home. Keep an eye out for Twisted Soul, however. Leslie Wynn's dog has been running pretty well at Coventry, and will be one running on at the end.

Swindon's Form
Derby fever certainly seems to be kicking in, with a fair few Swindon dogs having a look round Wimbledon in view of a run in the competition. The comment on the last blog with regards to the form from the competition actually made me think about the Arc as a whole (comments, by the way, are very welcome on here!)
When you look at the Arc over the last few years, I think it's fair to say that the form doesn't seem to have followed on well. Looking at the first year, Shaneboy Luke and Corrig Vieri were the big names in the first year, and arguably after the Arc there wasn't a lot of form on these dog's cards (Corrig Vieri went over a short 6, and I believe Luke only had a few more runs at OR level). Going through the other running's of the competition, the form going into other competitions isn't there. However, to me this year is different.
Due to the way the competition was run this year, including running it later, lesser entries etc, I think the quality really did stack up this year. Shaneboy Alley, the new track record holder and winner of the competition, I think is a real livewire to win this year's competition. He's a strong dog, with the formbook to back up what should be a credible campaign. Screen Critic, who finished 2nd to Alley, clocked a superb 28.36 in a trial round Wimbledon on Wednesday, and has been backed into 50's for the derby. He's a cracking e/w bet.
Barring the obvious runner, Ballymac Eske, and the Irish raiders such as Ballymac Vic and Roxholme Bully, you wouldn't go far wrong in looking at the Arc final for pointers.

When you look at the Arc over the last few years, I think it's fair to say that the form doesn't seem to have followed on well. Looking at the first year, Shaneboy Luke and Corrig Vieri were the big names in the first year, and arguably after the Arc there wasn't a lot of form on these dog's cards (Corrig Vieri went over a short 6, and I believe Luke only had a few more runs at OR level). Going through the other running's of the competition, the form going into other competitions isn't there. However, to me this year is different.

Looking Back, Looking Forward
This week, I think, has to have been one of the best weeks for Swindon. We've come off a superb Sky meeting on Wednesday, and the racing overall this week has been fab!
Looking back at the Sky production from Wednesday, I do think it was the most polished of the Sky shows. Obviously, due to the change in production company, there were always going to be teething problems with the show. Wimbledon, to me, wasn't very good at all, but things did pick up at Yarmouth and Kinsley. However, to me it was the Swindon show this week that looked more like the polished final package. Kudo's to all the guys at SIS, they're genuinely a pleasure to work with.
The racing itself, and first and foremost I must apologise for the tipping! The first two races went so well, and from there it just flatlined. However, on the night it must be said that there are no real hard luck stories. Every dog that won, won on merit. The three track records on the night was a real lift to the crowd (who were also brilliant!), and the overall winner, Shaneboy Alley, turned it into a precession. Well done to anyone who followed my AntePost picks, as I tipped Shaneboy and Screen Critic e/w for the competition.

The Pin Point Recruitment Arc Final Night: Preview
So here we are, folks. After a couple of weeks of some really good racing (and a few incidents!), we've made it to the big final. A note to anyone new to the new Sky production; the program is now available to view in most major bookmakers, aswell as Sky Sports. There's no excuse to miss it! A couple of things first however;
The Card
I'll be the first one to admit, this certainly isn't the classiest Sky card put together. Not to be detrimental to the owners, trainers and dogs involved. There just doesn't really seem to be anything that leaps off the page. If anything, it's the last two races before the big final that are the best affairs. However, this wasn't the fault of anyone in particular. I can tell you now that the puppy open only had two entries, the sprint had seven, and the stayers had the exact six. In an era where the argument for run money and prize money in general to be increased, and as such the response is to have the Sky races at £500 win, £100 others, the argument that 'prize money sells' clearly doesn't work. What is the answer to filling open races? I don't know. I certainly think that Swindon's location is now actually detrimental, whereas once it was prime estate! With the loss of Oxford, Reading and Milton Keynes, the nearest tracks are now up in the midlands, where there are tracks on the doorstep (Coventry, Nottingham, Sheffield) running regular opens for decent money. I do think that promoters (not just Swindon) have to think 'outside the box' to make the idea of open racing truly 'open' again. Make it worth the trainer's traveling. Even things such as a table for four in the restaurant (over a meal voucher), would go a long way.
One big positive to come out of the card, having had a really good look today, is that there are some great opportunities for our local trainers to be involved in some nice race wins, and get their gorgeous mug's all over the Sky cameras! What the card may be lacking in sheer quality, actually looks very competitive, so hopefully we have some decent finishes (and some decent price winners!)
'The Longwood Warrior Incident'
Yes, I've actually named the whole episode now! The one thing that, if anything has slightly grated at me during the competition, is that some very good performances by greyhounds have been overshadowed by one particular greyhound's 'antics'. I've already told you my position on last week's antics, with last Friday putting the whole debate into a completely different mind frame.
I think you've got to bare in mind, that if you run the two races where Warrior has been a bit 'Ali-esque', they're completely different races. In the first round, Warrior had the worst ride round the track ever, having to check in and out more times than an air hostess, before clammering for the rails on the run in. This week, however, I do actually think he was worse.
Before the look of shock truly sets in, let me set the scene. Last Friday, Jolly Bullseye was in auto-pilot around the 3rd and 4th bends. Admittedly, he does struggle a tad to get the Swindon 480m, however I don't think there was much doubt that he should have won the race. Warrior has ridden a great first and second bend, and is 2nd down the back. The pace he's shown to get to Bullseye is just phenomenal. However, once he's got to him, rather than cruising by, he's slammed on the brakes. Again though, he hasn't made contact, thus it doesn't warrant a DQ, but if I were his owner I'd be more naffed off about his last run than the one before, as he had every right to go past Bullseye and win comfortably.

A six railer race is never going to be the prettiest of affairs! The other problem aswell, is that everyone (barring Sharies in my opinion), actually really wants trap 1, so the only realistic vision on this race is the potential argy-bargy to the bend. I've gone for Butts Mott here on the ideal draw on the fence, and with her early pace I see her leading up Forest Mollie. Sharies Miller I see going off as favourite, however she's got Forest Dot on her outside who will be straight on her case. If anything, I see Sharies acting as a barrier for Mott to get round.

My Pick: Guinness Sky

This is actually a really decent little race, with my pick narrowly going for (who I predict to be favourite) Guinness Sky. I'm a regular viewer of Hove and Coventry, and I have a good idea of how Sky and Lad run their races. To be, Lad is very hit and miss at the boxes, which obviously in a sprint is the key. However, on the bunny he's pretty fast! I've gone for Sky due to his consistant trapping ability, and his pace is superb, with a quick 16.28 Hove run on his card.
Just a heads up to anyone playing the races at Swindon on Wednesday, do remember that the traps at Swindon are very different to what most of these greyhounds are used to. We use the roll-on curved front boxes, whereas most greyhounds are used to the flat-fronted hydraulics. This means that some could miss the kick!
20:04 - 509er (Division B)
My Pick: Stress Force

A highly competitive race this one, with my vote going for Carol Grasso's Stress Force. Again, as a viewer of RPGTV, I've been able to see Force on several occasions. It's safe to say that, when he's on the bunny, not alot will catch him! His times of 27.47 Henlow are lightning, and should see him in good stead here. There isn't a great deal of early pace in the race, so as long as he adapts to the track and traps, he should make all. Keep an eye out for Gemstone Jack and Matties Mate, who to me make up the forecast and tricast links in the race.
20:19 - Stayers
My Pick: Silbury Campion
Silbury Campion - 5/2
Stunning Rusty - 4/1
Airforce Harlem - 25/1
Ding Hero - 5/4F
Redhot Agent - 20/1
Navarone - 5/1
Again, another six railer affair here, and for that reason I've got to side with the red, Silbury Campion. Alan McDowell's runner is well housed here, and actually has the early pace to lead up the 2 dog on his outside. The outside runners in this one haven't had a look round, which for me is a massive issue, and could cause potential traffic problems for Ding Hero, housed in trap 4. He's the class hound of the race for sure, it's a case of whether he can escape any trouble. Do remember, it's a relatively short run to the bend over this trip, meaning that they haven't got a lot of time to sort themselves out going round the bend at full pace.

A classy affair this one, with Paul Sallis' Scolari Express getting my vote here. Running on debut for Paul, he's graded on with some really quick runs at Monmore, followed up with a brilliant sprint trial on Friday at Swindon. He really looked at home at the track. His Irish card is rather superb, and the draw on the fence should see him win this in style. This is a potential 'Derby-ticket greyhound'!

Ballymac Swift, trained by John Mullins, is definitely the class act in this race. She broke the track record at Coventry on Sunday over their marathon trip, and she does seem to be running out of her skin at the moment. She has got some brilliant early pace for a marathon bitch, which puts her in good stead for this race, as she has the make up to lead and make all. She's a classy bitch, the only issue being that she will be very short in the market!

This is a belter of a race to lead us into the big final, with my vote going for the Paul Young-trained greyhound Airlie Impact. Impact didn't run the best race in the world when he ran in the opening round of the Arc. Don't be too dis-heartened by that run, as the 480m wouldn't have really suited him, as he likes a long run up to the bend. He ran a stormer last week at Hove, clocking 29.69, and that run should put him in good stead here. To be fair, a case can be made for everyone in this race.

My Pick: Longwood Warrior (NB)

Now, I'm just going to hold my 'flame shield' up while I write this, as half of you probably think I'm bonkers! When the draw was made, as soon as the Longwood's were drawn as they are, I called Warrior the winner there and then.
The way I've read the race is that, 1) Warrior has been dying for the rails all competition. He now has that draw, and he should make use of it. 2) Longwood Bound in trap two makes the draw perfect for him. To me, as I've said before, Bound is a dead middle runner, and should be seeded as such IMO. However, here I feel he'll act as a barrier for Warrior on the run up. He can trap, and he has the early pace to cause Bullseye some traffic problems (apologise, I don't envisage Bullseye winning this!). With Droopys Reason wanting to come inside, aswell as Shaneboy Alley potentially cutting the corner, it could be game on off the second if Warrior is there. I have seen him, back last year, ping and make all, so he has the head to trap and make all. I do honestly think that, if everything goes right for him, he has the potential to break the clock.
Having said all that, in all honesty if Shaneboy Alley traps like he did last time, it's probably game over at the bend. However, if Warrior's handy, all eyes will be on what happens coming home!
The main thing is that all runners have a good journey round. Best of luck to all the greyhounds, owners and trainers. I hope you have a great night!
